With reference to the expulsion
of the Royal Family from Lisbon and the establishment of a
Republic in Portugal, I have the honour to report to you
concerning events in the neighbouring Colony of Macao.
I gather that the events in the
Mother Country are generally speaking not popular among
the better classes, but the soldiers and more particularly
the sailers are in support of the Republic chiefly in the
hope that various grievances in the matter of pay &c., may
be redressed. The Governor in accordance with telegraphic
orders from Lisbon proclaimed the Republic, but of the two
Portuguese vessels one continued for some time to fly the
Royal flag. Soon after the declaration instructions were
received for the issue of a decree expelling the Jesuits
